Why have an Engagement Session
There are so many reasons to book an engagement session, or pre-wedding shoot as they are sometimes called. They are a great way to spend time with me before your big day and get used to how I work and having a camera pointed at you, without all the stress of...you know...it being your wedding day. It also gives me an idea about how you two interact with each other and the camera...are you a little camera shy, a blinker or a complete natural when the camera's pointed at you.
Engagement photos can also be used for your RSVP's to add that lovely personal touch. Some couples like to make the photos part of the wedding itself, having them hung up in the entrance hall of the ceremony venue or even having them displayed in the middle of the tables at the reception are common choices.
Plus, having photos of the two of you as a couple is just a great thing to do. In this world of smartphone cameras most couples don't have dedicated, romantic photos of them, just selfies, which, let's be honest, are not all that mantelpiece friendly.
What happens on an engagement shoot
An engagement shoot will ideally take place before you send out your RSVP's. This is so that you will then at least have the option to use the photos for them. However, you can have it whenever you want between booking me and your wedding.
The shoot can take place wherever you want it to, although I am a big advocate of choosing a place that means something to the two of you. Perhaps it's where you had your first date or where the proposal happened or you had your first kiss.
I have found that it is best to set aside 2 hours for the engagement session as this gives enough time to feel comfortable in front of the camera and to get a good number of photos for you guys, and if you are planning on wearing more than one outfit then it also gives you enough time to get changed.
And speaking of outfit changes, I recommend bringing at least 1 change of clothes as this is a good way of mixing it up. I find that one casual look and one smart look is the way to go and don't worry about getting undressed in the wilderness as I bring a pop up tent with me for you to use :)
And lastly, if you have any fur babies then please, please, please bring them along to the shoot with you. Partly this is because I love dogs and can't get enough of them but also they are part of your family and look amazing in engagement sessions (plus I want doggie snuggles).
